Congrats Diana Nyad! {First Person to Swim 110 Miles From Cuba to Florida}

Today 64-year old Diana Nyad became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage! She finished at about 2PM EST, and the 110 mile swim took her about 53 hours. {Her swim is the longest recorded ocean swim without the aid of a shark cage or flippers!}

Diana has attempted the swim four times before – with her first try in 1978 and her most recent in 2012. Diana stated before this fifth attempt that it would be her last try to complete the grueling swim. During this swim, she used a protective mask around her face to better protect her from deadly box jellyfish that had previously prevented her completion of the event.

Immediately after Nyad’s finish, a large team met her with IVs and fluid to help her — she appeared sunburt with swollen lips after coming out of the water.

Some of Nyad’s previous accomplishments include swimming around Manhattan in 1975, swimming from the Bahamas to Florida, and at one time her ranking of 30th among women’s squash players.
