Public Speaking = Fun! (When Talking About Ironmans) | By Olivia C.

For lots of people, public speaking is a dreadful task that is to be avoided at all costs. However, I proved that this wasn’t the case this week! I gave an informative speech in Public Speaking class on what was probably the best topic to speak about: The Lake Placid Ironman.

I wrote the outline for my speech while at Lake Placid, and it couldn’t have given me more inspiration.

Gorgeous Lake Placid!

When I chose this topic, I knew there would be nothing I would rather research, spend hours studying, and talking about. On the day of my speech, I opened up stating the distances of the race and with just that, everyone’s mouths dropped. It was awesome seeing everyone’s reaction to the Ironman race at once. And as I went through my speech, I learned…

1. People can’t believe that it’s even possible for someone to swim 2.4 miles
2. It’s pretty hard not to get tongue twisted with all of those crazy distances
3. When I said the words that Mike Reilly says at the finish “You Are An Ironman”, it’s touching and emotional… even for people who haven’t even heard of a triathlon before!

I was able to kayak on the lake while visiting Lake Placid the same weekend I was planning my speech!

If you ever need to put together a speech and you can choose the topic, speak about an Ironman! It will captivate your audience from start to finish and as triathletes we all know how easy it is to talk about triathlons for hours and hours and hours on end.
