Today is the official 3rd anniversary of YoungTri! It’s hard to believe that it’s already been three years. 🙂
When I began to formulate the idea for YoungTri about three and a half years ago, I was a rising high school junior in high school. I played varsity lacrosse and ran cross country at school, but I knew that my true passion was triathlons. So, I decided to dedicate myself to the sport full time. And as I began to race more and more, especially the summer going into my junior year of high school, I knew that I wanted to create a way for young triathletes from all different locations to connect around their shared passion — swim, bike, and run. My high school didn’t have a triathlon team, and although I always enjoyed racing with my family members, I wanted to find a way to make more triathlete friends — to create a medium through which young triathletes could share their story, meet each other, and connect.
The idea also stemmed from my tendency to like keeping in touch with people from all different places.
I’m very outgoing, and I honestly enjoy learning about other peoples’ lives. Their path. Their story. I’m still connected with people who I met on a plane and shared stories – people who I’ve met once on college tours; at random triathlons, ran into once in a crowded city and shared a conversation, vacations, trips to other states, and more. And part of what makes YoungTri so special to me is that I’m constantly able to learn about so many other peoples’ lives — and their personal tri story.
Today, it is very rare if I go a day without speaking to someone who I’ve connected with through YoungTri. I’ve made so many lasting friendships and connections through the organization — which always brings a smile to my face. Kaitlin (now YoungTri’s Vice President… and my best friend :)) and I still laugh about the fact that we met up through a post in the YT Facebook group, met in Lake Placid, kept in touch, and both ended up going to school in Boston (even though she’s from Florida and I’m from New Jersey)!
I’m still friends with the original contributors from YoungTri — and it’s hard to believe that we’ve known each other for almost 3 years! Patrick and I still joke about the fact that we haven’t yet met in person (Kaitlin, Aaron, Alex, and my other friends Kerry, Sara, and Katie I have all met), but we swear that we’re going to make it happen this summer along with some of the others! 🙂
This past year, YoungTri has grown to members from 14 states to 47, was featured on Fox News and in the cover story of USAT Magazine, launched a worldwide ambassador program, continued the YoungTri Times Weekly Newsletter, a daily blog, and more.
Kaitlin & I (Along with the rest of the YT team)! Are so excited about what’s ahead for YoungTri — including speaking at the Triathlon Business International Conference, growing the ambassador program, events, and more. Stay tuned 🙂
3 is just the beginning. I can’t wait for many more years of informing, engaging, and connecting to come with YoungTri 🙂
Stay tuned for posts from other contributors about YT’s anniversary today & the rest of this week!
