An Indoor Biker’s Guide Against Boredom

Bike shoes, bike gloves, that thing that holds the front tires, and …Netflix? 

A two hour bike on a trainer can be quite monotonous. The same motion over and over — sometimes at the same cadence and speed for long periods of time. It can get boring. There is not a crowd cheering you on or interesting trees or street signs to keep your mind on anything but the bike.

When biking outside, this is not as big of an issue. For one, you have to remain focused to be safe. Not only that, but the world that is whizzing by is often interesting enough to entertain.

When biking inside, on the other hand, boredom is a large issue. Some people turn to music. Some people turn to listening to books. And some people watch tv. Unfortunately for me, there is not very often a good show on when I am biking, and there is only so much “on demand”.

My solution? A stool, my laptop, some headphones, and a Netflix account. Two hours doesn’t seem so long when I’m watching my favorite show or movie. An action movie can make me increase my speed just as much as any pump up song. My favorite character running from an explosion is enough to keep me going. Even just a sitcom is enough for me.

Triathlon Business International Conference: I Will Be Speaking!

photo-210I was chosen to speak at the Triathlon Business International Conference in Marina del Rey, California on January 27th! Kaitlin and I will join triathlon industry leaders (Including Mike Reilly “Voice of Ironman” pictured) from all over the world at the annual conference. I will be speaking about YoungTri, the role of young athletes in the sport, my experience in triathlon, social media’s role in the sport, and more!

Kaitlin and I will be out there for a few days, and we hope to see some members from SoCal while out there! We’re both really excited about attending the conference.

Besides the best part meeting my now best friend Kaitlin (and YT VP 🙂 ) one day earlier, Lake Placid 2011 was extra fun because I had the opportunity to be filmed for MTV’s “Made”! Branden was being “Made” into a triathlete and I was filmed to give him advice. The show put an interesting spin on things, but it was a lot of fun to film!

Think one Ironman is tough? Then talk to Jaime Azuaje, age 26. On October 8th, 2013, he became the youngest participant in the world to complete an Ironman a day FOR 30 DAYS STRAIGHT. That’s right. 140.6 miles. For 30 days in a row… Crazy right?!

Teen is Only Participant in World’s Only

Max Bloom, a British 17 year old, may be starting a new wave in triathlon — the “tri-llama-thon”. This new type of tri involves swimming, biking, running, and — wait for it — walking a llama. Bloom says he hopes to make this an annual tradition.

IMLP: 3 Months Ago Already!

Can’t believe that Ironman Lake Placid was exactly three months ago today. I’m already looking forward to round two next year! The race was DEFINITELY one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done… but it was also a really rewarding experience. Racing alongside my dad and with my two uncles and cousin made the day so much more enjoyable.

5 ways you know that it’s not summer anymore.

  1. Open water swims and long beach days are a thing of the past and have been replaced with indoor lap sessions and the whole “trying to convince yourself to get out of bed and venture into the cold” ordeal each morning.
  2. You. Have. No. More. Tris. This. Year. Planning next year’s calendar already?
  3. Your hard-earned training tan lines have been replaced by paleness. All. Over.
  4. You’ve brushed the dust off off your cycleops or other indoor trainer and have began to realize that you can no longer ride in the morning without being FREEZING. Brr.
  5. Out with the nike running shorts and tank tops and in with the leggings and long sleeves!

Reflections – “Where to Go From Here?”

Lately, I’ve been very reflective. Pausing a lot to think — think about where I’ve been, where I am, and where I’d like to be (both in racing and in life). This summer was a big step for me — I completed my first Ironman at age 18, which had always been a goal of mine. It was an incredible feeling to cross the finish line with my dad; a rush of emotions and adrenaline that can only be experienced race-day.

This fall has been a transition period for me; moving from summer triathlon training to intense schoolwork, rowing, and otherwise here at Harvard. It took some adjusting to last year, but this year I absolutely love Cambridge. I have amazing roommates, other closer friends who make my experience here enjoyable and fulfilling. But besides all the exciting parts of being back at college — football games, social events, regattas, triathlons, meals out with friends, trips to Boston, and more — other things can become a bit overwhelming.

When I get overwhelmed, I tend to deal with it in a number of ways. One of them is reflection. I’ve found that this approach — both internal and external — can help manage the “Where do I go from here?” feeling that can eat away at not just me, but myriad other college students, athletes, adults, and more at various times in life.

Sometimes, especially at Harvard, I feel like everyone has everything figured out. Like people are rushing from moment to moment, place to place, class to class, without even thinking. Like people already have their entire lives planned out in their minds — graduate. Work in finance or consulting. And so on and so forth. Which makes me feel a little bit out of place, especially because I’m still debating what I want to concentrate in (Harvard’s word for majors, we have to decide by mid-November)! And I don’t have set concrete plan for the rest of my life.

This applies not only to my situation at college, but also with training. Sometimes, after finishing a big race or attempting a new milestone, we can come to a point where we need to decide where we want to go. Pick a direction. Pick a spot; a niche.


Sometimes it’s okay to not know. To sit back, reflect, appreciate, and think.

I think that sometimes, that’s the problem with our way of thinking. We don’t take enough time to reflect. To get lost. To understand that sometimes, it’s okay to not know where exactly you’re going from your current location.

This was best brought to my attention by Kaitlin — after she wrote a piece for YoungTri that included how she liked to get “lost” on runs (as in, run wherever the road takes her), but that she made sure to take her phone with her when she did so. So that she made sure to couple adventure with security.

And it kind of hit me that that would be a wonderful way to approach training all the time — and even life in general.

And as such, as of right now, I’ve been taking some time to let myself reflect. To know that wherever the road takes me will be the beautiful, right road where I’ve always meant to end up. Training, school, work, and social life are all a part of our puzzles — and they all have a way of working themselves out as long as we’ve pointed ourself in the general right direction.

It’s okay to not know exactly “Where to Go from Here?”. It’s okay to reflect. That’s what life is for. For figuring things out.

How to Find the Motivation to Train

Do you ever find yourself unenthusiastic about exercising or frequently skipping workouts? Sometimes you’re just too tired, too busy, or just not in the mood to go bike 30 miles. But you know what- you’re a triathlete. The definition of this sport is learning how to push yourself. Get off the couch and go do that workout!

Here are some tips on how to motivate yourself: 

Just put on the workout clothes. I once read in a fitness magazine that by simply putting on your workout clothes, it greatly increases the chances of you working out. Whenever I’m going back and forth about whether to go for a run, I immediately throw on running shorts and a moisture-wick shirt.  Before I know it, I’ve hit the pavement. Works every time. 🙂

Make a routine. Making a schedule helps to keep yourself accountable and it will increase the likelihood of getting in your daily exercise. I swim every Monday night and take a spin class every Wednesday. I try to fill in the rest of the days with running. Take it up a notch from my routine: make a training calendar and plan what workout you will do each day!

Train with friends. Lately I’ve been running with my roommate, and I really enjoy it. We talk the whole time and we are both able to run a few miles more than we usually do on solo runs. Working out with friends can help motivate you to get out and exercise, and sometimes you can even get a better workout in than you would on your own!

Find new routes. My favorite part about running is discovering new things. I’m an explorer at heart; Columbus is my guy.  I purposely get lost on runs, but I pay attention to what turns I make, so I’m never truly lost. I always find the prettiest houses and neatest restaurants on my training adventures. A couple weeks ago I even found a forest conservation! I definitely recommend running with a phone though- in case you get lost for real. Plus, you can take pictures of the cool places you find!

Make a training time. What time of day best fits into your schedule? I always train in the afternoon after my classes, but sometimes I train at night if I’m going to swim or spin. Getting up early to workout doesn’t work for me because I’m too rushed getting ready before my first class. However, I have many friends who like to wake up early to workout to make sure they fit it into their day. Find what works for you and stick to it.

“Winning the Lottery”: My Trip to Watch My Dad Race Kona in 2008 and How it Shaped My Love for Triathlon

In the spirit of Kona being tomorrow, I wanted to share some of my favorite photos from my trip to Kona in 2008. My dad got into Kona through the lottery, and had an awesome race. (I still remember the moment he saw his name on TV and found out he got in. It was the most excited I’ve ever seen him! Screams and cheers all around the house!) He finished in a little over fifteen hours. It was my first time in Hawaii, and it was an unreal experience.

I remember waking up the morning of the race to walk my dad down to the start — a warm, balmy haze running over the vast Hawaii ocean. I walked along the edge of the stone wall that runs along Ali’i Drive in Kona, and I stopped for a moment to look around and take in what was around me. The best triathletes in the world were competing in this race. It was an amazing feeling knowing that i was there to watch it unfold.

Throughout the day, my mom and brother explored Kona while running around trying to catch my dad at various points of the race. The hotel was too far to walk back, so we stayed in the main Kona town strip for the entire day! We were so exhausted by the end of the day that we ended up taking a quick nap in the car before watching dad finish, haha.

Throughout the week, we experienced everything from swimming part of the swim course (and seeing the most AMAZING, beautiful fish on the swim), swimming out to a large ship to try Kona coffee, going hiking in a rainforest, taking a helicopter ride above lava fields, and more. The race itself was breathtaking — seeing so many amazing athletes in one place was one of the most inspirational experiences I’ve had to date. I even got to meet Ironman Legend Mark Allen (as well as running into Tony Hawk on the plane ride over, haha).

When my dad finally ran down Ali’i Drive to finish — with Mike Reilly chanting “YOU ARE AN IRONMAN” — I knew that I wanted to be a part of this sport for life. To do an Ironman myself. And to one day compete at Kona.

After the race, the experience was even more magical. My family and I danced for hours around the most passionate and exciting crowd I’ve ever encountered. To this day, the song “Down Under” by Men at Work reminds my family of this night. 🙂

My experience at Kona (and, of course, my dad) have been two of the main things driving my passion for triathlons to date. I can’t wait to see where my triathlon adventures take me in the future. (I’m hoping down Ali’i Drive at some point :))
